#1 Maestro's Adjustable Height Forend

Tue Jan 01, 2013 4:56 pm

My latest project is a two-stage height setting for my forend. It is especially challenging because it is going to be built into an existing part so a lot of measurements and rooms are given already.

Does the backend drop or just pivot?

Also is it fixed to the alum stock by trigger (3 screws) and from underside through the wood? If so it wont work, unless its just two fixed height settings.
If a jobs worth doing, do it right or not at all.

Of course, as you can see on the cross sections picture, there are only two fixed positions, I think they will be more than enough: the lower one for the high uphill shots and for the kneelers, and the extreme one for the extreme hight shots. First I thought at some kind of continuous adjusting possibility (with left and right handed threads) but it would have stand out from the bottom of the forend and wasn't too massive.

How it works: see attached pictures below, but the point is that it rotates around an axis at the back and can be fixed in two positions. The fixing in all the 3 positions (closed, stage 1 and 2) is done by a half sphere pushed by an adjustable spring.
